Billboard Country Music #1 Hits From 1990 Through 1999
The decade of the 1990′s yielded a bumper crop of 261 #1 songs on country radio, as chronicled on the Billboard Country Chart. Music fans enjoyed a strong combination of familiar artists and new superstars. Popular on the 1990-1999 Hot Country Singles charts were holdover successes from the 1980′s like George Strait, Reba McEntire, Alabama, and Vince Gill, and emerging new talent such as Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, Clint Black, and, in the second half of the decade, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, and Shania Twain. Women artists had more success regularly reaching the top 10 on Billboard than in previous decades, and numerous artists freely crossed the line between traditional and pop-tinged country. For the first half of the decade, #1 songs rarely stayed on top of the charts for three or four weeks; but by decade’s end, such artists as Toby Keith, Kenny Chesney, and Lonestar were able to keep their songs on top for 5 weeks and even longer.
